Scripture | John 14:15
“If you love Me, keep My commandments”
Most of the time when we hear the word “stewardship” we think about our finances. Our minds immediately think about the 10 percent we have learned to give of our wages, if we are wage earners. We “pay” our 10 percent tithe, and hopefully thank God for the 90 percent that is ours to take care of our needs, desires, etc.
Genesis 1:1 states, in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The first sentence of the Bible without question or doubt confirms that God is the sole owner of “everything” that was created; even the ninety percent we claim as our own! God the Creator owns it all! That statement says a lot more than that, but stewardship is what we are talking about right now.
God decided to make mankind stewards or managers of what He owns, the whole of His creation. We are accountable to God for not only the ten percent of our finances, but also how we manage “all” the resources of this world; from the water of the seas and oceans to the land and the trees; from the wildlife to the domestic pets; from the talents he has freely given to the acquired skills of our employment; from our bodies to the air we breathe; we are accountable for how we take care of all the resources God has entrusted to us!
We can choose the type of stewards or managers we desire to be by how we choose to honor and love God (if you love me keep my commandments – John 14:15) or we can choose to be mediocre, doing only enough to “appear” holy and godly (2 Tim 3:5). We can choose to be middle-of-the-road followers of Christ or we can learn how to put “self” to death and live the life God created us to live in fellowship with Him. We are the conduit, a visible expression, of the love God showers on His own. We should live as the song states, “so God can use us – everyday.”
Father in the name of Jesus, please help us see as You see. Help us to understand what You have given into our hands. Help us to be better stewards of the resources You created for mankind. Our desire Lord is a closer walk with You throughout this journey of life. We thank and praise You Father for hearing us when we call and for Your faithfulness to answer our prayers. I ask this in Your dear Son Jesus’ name, Amen!
