Watch What You Say!

Scripture | Proverbs 21:23

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.  (NIV)

Evangelist Billy Graham tells the story of a woman in England who was known by the vicar (minister) to be a habitual gossiper. She asked him how she could make amends?  She was told to put a goose feather on the porch of each person she had slandered. Once this was completed, she asked the vicar, “Is that all?” The minister told her No.  Now you must go and gather each feather and bring it to me. After a long time, the woman returned but had no feathers with her. She said that the wind had blown all of them away.  The minister said to her, so it is with gossip.  “Unkind words are easily dropped, but we can never take them back again.”

Words matter, and we see this clearly in the book of Genesis, Chapter 1, where “God said”, and the world was created.  What we say is so important, that Jesus said in Matt. 12:36 “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

As we grow in our walk with the Lord, our words should not be about gossip, but about praise and glory to our Creator and Sustainer.  We should not neglect any opportunity to honor God verbally for who He is and what He has done for us. For His Word says:

Psalms 103:2 – “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
Hebrews 13:15 — “Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.”
Colossians 3:16 — “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Lord, help us to bless You, praise You, and sing with grace in our hearts to You daily.  Amen.
